A Great Place in a Great State for Biomedical Research DevelopmentThe Sanford Research Park is a 185-acre planned development located at the Southern entrance to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a progressive, modern community of 150,000 with a MSA population of 250,000. It will be highly visible at the intersection of Interstate 29 and the Interstate 229 business loop that traverses through Sioux Falls. The park will be home to all of Sanford Research/USD research center expansion in basic, translational and clinical programs (including The Sanford Project). Initial site plans outline common walkways, water features, and gathering places creating a campus like setting and atmosphere. The design of the infrastructure, landscaping and architectural covenants are intended to bring about an environment of innovation, discovery and idea sharing. In addition to the research and office component, local developers have plans for retail, convention, and other lifestyle amenities immediately to the south of the park. Additional residential developments are also planned to support the growth of the area. The site can accommodate over 2 million square feet of office, research and light manufacturing buildings. In addition to walking/biking trails, water features will be developed in an aesthetic and eco-friendly manner. Sanfords presence as a leading provider of health care services will provide research companies with the type of clinical population and infrastructure necessary to advance medical innovation in a manner consistent with Sanford Healths mission of improving the human condition. Sanfords dedication to develop prominent research, coupled with the high quality, innovative and flexible park design will enable Sanford to meet the constantly evolving needs of future partners and tenants within the boundaries of the park. The quality of the park, in conjunction with the business friendly environment in South Dakota, makes Sanford Research Park a great place for members of the scientific community to bring their organizations future expansion projects. It also will provide the environment and assistance for any start up business. South Dakota and Sioux Falls offer a friendly and healthy biomedical research environment including a State research development emphasis funded as part of its 2010 Initiative. Favorable tax, environmental and agricultural conditions exist for biomedical companies to build partnerships in South Dakota for research and development. Sanford Health has made a commitment to support biomedical research development through its Sanford Initiatives. And now with the addition of the Sanford Research Park, it is able to facilitate biomedical growth involving shared and independent development within a supportive, synergetic, research development infrastructure. The prominent, attractive location of the Sanford Research Park and its planned adjacent commercial and residential areas offers unique advantages for growth, recruitment, and collaboration. Sioux Falls is a great place to live and work - recently voted 45th out of the Top 100 best places to live and launch a business by CNN Money Week. South Dakota was voted sixth of top 10 pro-business states in the Pollina Report, a study conducted by Pollina Corporate Real Estate, one of the nations leaders in providing site selection and corporate relocation services. As a comprehensive, integrated healthcare system involving physicians, hospital, health insurance and community health services, Sanford Health can be an innovative partner for companies involved in bio medical research and development. Basic science, clinical and translational research relationships can be established for clinical trial and further develop new discoveries. Sanford Healths multi-specialty 400 physician clinic and 500 bed tertiary medical center provides critical "bench to bedside" possibilities. Scientific training and education is a cornerstone of the plan for the Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota which provides academic opportunities for researchers. There is a new MD/PhD program at the Sanford School of Medicine. And, related strong biochemical science majors exist as other area colleges and universities including Augustana College, University of Sioux Falls, South Dakota Sate University, and Dakota State University. A broad range of technical training at local institutions including Southeast Technical Institute, Colorado Technical Institute, and Killian College provide an ample and skilled research work force.
According to "Research! America," four out of five South Dakota residents feel that spending money on medical and health research is important not only to their health but also to the health of the states economy. According to the poll commissioned by "Research! America," 87% of residents say it is important for South Dakota to be a leader in medical research. The Boyd Co. recently conducted a new U.S. Corporate Location Study which reported projected total annual operating costs for a representative 100-worker biopharma facility of 75,000 square feet amongst 50 established and newly emerging industry hubs. Sioux Falls was the lowest cost location in this study with a projected annual operating cost of $8.4 million per year. Also identified was the fact that South Dakota has no state personal income tax and the state provides additional relocation benefits for high tech companies.
